We first opened our doors in the UK 41 years ago, with a single restaurant in Woolwich and a handful of employees. That restaurant is still there today – and there are 1,250 others too, serving communities up and down the UK.
In that time, we’ve hired 1.5 million people and supported hundreds of British businesses, taking them with us as we grow. In total, our contribution to the UK over those 41 years is worth £43 billion to the UK economy – and we’re incredibly proud of this.
2014-15 has been an important year for our business. We’ve seen a rollout of nearly £140 million of investment in our stores, with more to come, and we’ve continued to hire, creating around 2,500 new jobs; taking our UK workforce to 100,000.
To celebrate this contribution, from 1974 to 2015, we are launching Serving the UK Together.
Serving the UK Together not only sets out our contribution to the UK and the communities we work in. For the first time, it also sets out a series of commitments that we’re making – publicly – to the UK for the next five years.
We have always been committed to our role in communities, to developing our people and to providing the highest quality food we can. Serving the UK Together brings these commitments to life.
We’ve created this website so that you can view our commitments, spanning every area of our business and benefiting every region and nation in the UK. You can also learn more about our contribution to the UK, and track our progress over the coming years.
We want to keep supporting regional economies and backing jobs across every sector we can, from paper bag manufacturing to renewable energy to dairy farming. And we want to continue to offer high quality food, quickly and affordably, to our customers. And we want to continue to provide opportunities for our people through apprenticeship and training.
We’re immensely proud of what we’ve achieved so far. But we don’t want to stop here. We know there’s more we can do, and we’re excited about the challenge. We’ll keep putting our customers first, investing in our people, and contributing positively to our communities. As we know that when they prosper, we do too.

“I am a huge fan of McDonalds – especially in Harlow. As well as being a big local
employer which hires local apprentices, it also provides the community great
quality food at affordable prices.”
Rob Halfon MP, 10 July 2015
“Behind all the figures is actually the thousands of people who work for McDonald’s
and the contribution they make, not just to the global brand, but also actually to
their local communities”.
Mike Freer MP, 19 June 2014
“Without support from McDonald’s, we wouldn’t be able to provide that level of
support to clubs, which really is the lifeblood of our game.”
Andy Gould, Scottish FA, 24 June 2014
“I think McDonald’s as a brand has done a great thing for Wales”
Shakel Valu, South Wales Chamber of Commerce, 2 July 2014
